Family Fish Market is a longtime staple seafood market tucked into Carson’s Avalon Boulevard stretch, best known for fresh, ready-to-go fried fish dishes that draw a steady local crowd. Far from your typical fish counter experience, this spot functions as a neighborhood destination where families and longtime patrons come for reliably seasoned, home-style fried seafood — think catfish, red snapper, shrimp — paired with classic Southern sides like coleslaw, hush puppies, and macaroni salad.

The atmosphere here buzzes with a casual, no-frills vibe typical of a busy local market-cum-takeout joint. You’re likely to encounter regulars picking up their Friday tradition or folks ordering ahead for a quick lunch. The team behind the counter keeps service moving; while there can be a wait during peak times, the pace feels efficient, with staff showing friendly energy that keeps the vibe welcoming rather than rushed.

This isn’t a sit-down restaurant but a spot where the focus is on fresh-cooked seafood to take home or eat nearby. Many visitors appreciate the option to call ahead and skip the sometimes 15 to 20-minute wait, especially on weekends or Friday afternoons when orders tend to peak. The market’s location in Carson means it draws in seafood lovers who want a break from the usual inland options, especially those who miss the variety and seasoning that more coastal Southern California offerings deliver.

Those who grow up in the area or have family traditions here often come back for the familiar flavors that are hard to replicate elsewhere — coastal seasoned fish cooked to order, with pickles and a tangy house-made tartar sauce adding a little something extra. It’s a solid choice if you’re craving seafood that reminds you of home-cooked meals, with enough variety beyond just catfish or shrimp to satisfy regular customers.

Best times to visit are just before standard meal rushes to avoid longer waits, but calling ahead makes pickup more straightforward. The market’s straightforward, practical service style and reliable seafood quality make it a steady part of local food routines rather than a destination for casual dining. If you value freshly cooked fried seafood with a neighborhood feel in Carson, Family Fish Market is a spot where local taste and tradition come together in takeaway form.

Very tasty…Came to eat here Friday afternoon 11/14/25. Great! Customer Service. The young man, at the front desk had a great smile, great Vibe with Boss, energy. I got the whiting fish with coleslaw and fries. It came with surprise pickles. I didn’t wait long… Pricing was great. I will tell a friend… Thank you!

One of the things that I miss most about leaving California, besides the weather and my family. My family used to eat here every Friday for decades. I love and miss this place so much. If you live in a state that doesn't touch the ocean or isn't near it, all they eat is catfish...bleh. The variety here and the fact that they cook it for you...you can't beat it!

Hey you guys so this place gets really packed so I would call ahead because its a solid 23 minute wait. The red snapper was so good and seasoned and the shrimp was really good too.. but that tartar sauce is made in house or something because its really good make sure you get that. And make sure you grab them pickles and peppers . I will definitely be going back.

Have been going here for over 20+years good still taste good. But the phone service can be a little annoying at times when you call. Update →(concerning the annoying comment, the girl that was working there is now gone and making a phone order is much easier now) But honestly it's much better to place your order over the phone and driving down to pick it up. Because it takes at least 15-20 minutes for your order to be cooked if you order at the market. Looking at some of the reviews concerning the pricing I just updated the pictures with the new menu prices since the pics on Google maps were the older menu prices that people would assume they are correct if it's your first time going. Hopefully these new menus will help those looking to place a phone order but unsure of the prices! Enjoy
